How often?

Manufacturers say at least once a year. If you sew most days, or work with fleece, denim, batting or anything lint-heavy, twice a year is closer to right. Industrial machines running production hours need it far more often than that — that is what maintenance contracts are for.

Questions about this

Is a tune-up the same as a repair?

No. A tune-up is scheduled maintenance on a working machine. A repair fixes something that has already gone wrong. Regular tune-ups are what stop you needing repairs.

My machine still sews. Does it need servicing?

Probably. Machines degrade gradually — stitches get slightly less even, the machine gets slightly louder, and you adapt without noticing. Most people are surprised how different it feels afterwards.
