It’s been a fun 6+ months of learning how to sew and trying out new projects, learning techniques, etc. I’m very grateful to the folks on r/sewing and r/sewhelp for their project posts, direct and indirect advice and feedback, and support of each other’s work.
As I learn from online tutorials and my own mistakes, I’m beginning to recognize the areas in which I need more practice or perhaps formal classes. I’m curious to hear what other sewists have learned that they wish they knew when they first started. Anything related to machines, equipment, notions, pattern selection, pattern making, fabric, techniques. Was there an idea or preconceived notion you had that ended up making sewing more challenging for you – or easier in some ways?
I’ll go first: for years, my mother would talk about how difficult it was to insert zippers that it made me adverse to the idea. I finally decided to see zippers as a challenge I could learn to master. While I have yet to make any clothing with zippers, I’ve now made 4 zippered pouches and I don’t feel as daunted by the process. Going slowly, using a zipper foot, and watching my seam allowance made a huge difference.
