If you are a stay at home mum looking for an effective way to earn some extra income and you have a sewing machine and the ability to sew, perhaps you would be able to start your own business working at home taking in alterations and sewing jobs.

It is a very easy and affordable business as you have all the equipment already. The best way to get started is to set aside an area in the house where you will be work without maybe disturbing the rest of the family or at least so you can keep all your bits and pieces in one place.

The letters need to be large and clear enough to read from a distance and always make sure you include your phone number or other contact details.

Another option would be to put a small advertisement in the newspaper, a flyer on notice boards, perhaps make up a flyer and distribute around the local area whilst taking your dog for a walk, but the best form of advertising which is totally free is to talk!

Talk to friends, acquaintances, neighbors, etc. because once you have a few customers, if you do a good enough job, your business will grow as a result via satisfied customers talking to their own network of friends. The best way is for people to be able to drop their alterations around to your house and explain the type of sewing job they would like done on their garments. Sometimes your customers may need to try something on while you make some adjustments using pins and so a private area for changing would be useful.

You could even get creative and call your work at home sewing business a name like ‘Susan’s Sewing’ and make up a personalized receipt book or perhaps use the computer to generate receipts. So there is your business, work at home sewing jobs are very simple to set up, very simple to do and a great way to earn money in your spare time while you are at home.
