What's this fabric called? Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

I’ve got this backpack and I want to make a jacket/light coat out of this kind of fabric, or preferably something that looks as much like this as possible but is a bit lighter and less stiff. Anyone have any ideas for what to look for?

It looks a bit like canvas but nothing I’ve seen in real life or online fabric stores have quite the same quality I’m looking for (what I really want is the way light reacts to it; I don’t really know how to put it into words but look at the folded bits on the left half of the image). It seems to be somewhat water resistant but definitely not waterproof so I’m wondering if maybe it’s partially coated with wax or something?

I need it in medium-dark/light charcoal grey and khaki. If I can’t find anything I’ll use corduroy (it reacts to light in a similar way), but I’d prefer something more like this if possible. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
