Waist drawstring repair Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

I have 2 pair of warm up type pants with an elastic/drawstring waistband and the string has come out. I know there is probably a special tool, but I don’t have access to get to a sewing store, or the funds to buy said tool (or a tailor). Is there something I could use around the house? The waist would be a men’s large, so getting through the elastic waist would be some distance. Wire/fishing line (if I had it) would snag or poke through the fabric (polyester I believe). Maybe a chopstick with the string taped to it? Thanks for any help ladies and gents!
