For those interested in hitting the road while bringing a slice of home with you, a tent trailer may your best bet.

Prior to buying a tent trailer, ensure there is a hitch on it and your car’s towing capacity can handle the weight. When the trailer is attached, the hitch should be perfectly flat while resting. Most automobiles can handle an average sized tent trailer with no problems, and several can even be towed by motorcycles.

As for amenities, the choice is really up to you. I am quite comfortable with a mid range model, but if you are interested in your own shower and toilet, then by all means go for it. A generator is another option to consider: weigh your desire for a hot meal with the added cost of running the microwave.

If you are looking for a serious tent trailer, check out the 2008 Viking Model 2465 Slide-Out. Not only does it have two king size beds, it also comes equipped with a fridge, stove and toilet. You can easily sleep six people (more with kids) and have a nice family dinner.

If the Slide-Out seems a bit much, take a look at the 2008 Viking 1706. This model is about two thirds the length (twelve vs. eighteen feet) and still offers rooms opposite each other (though they are doubles instead of kings). The same optional amenities are available, with the exception of a toilet.

Remember, trailer parts are difficult to come by, so maintain a relationship with whomever sold it to you. In addition, check out an RV store, as they oftentimes have similar set ups which you could use on your tent trailer.
