Turning a one-piece nylon/Lycra body suit into a two-pi Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

Hi sewers! I’m a drag queen with no experience sewing, but I’m very interested to learn! One thing I’d like to do is cut a zentai/morph/nylon bodysuit at the waist so it can become a two-piece. This would allow me to easily take off part of the suit. I’ve looked online and it seems the companies don’t offer this option. I know stretchy material has its own unique challenges—would I need a serger? And I would probably need to add elastic bands where I cut the body suit to keep it in place, right? If you have any suggestions or tips, I’m all ears!
