Have you recently signed for a sewing class or thinking about taking one? Sewing classes are a great way to learn how to sew and to learn new techniques. But before you sign up for any class, there are some things that you should know. Things like knowing what to expect from your class, being prepared, asking questions and more will help you to succeed in your class. To get you started, here are some tips that you should know before you sign up for any sewing classes.
-
Research the class before you take it. Find out what level of sewers the class is for (beginner or experienced), if you will be sewing or simply just watching someone sew. Find out how many students will be in the class and take note of the maximum number of students allowed, since this will be an indication of how much time the instructor has for each student. If you can, talk to the instructor before you sign up for the class to get an idea of what will be covered in the class and if you like the instructor.
-
Bring all the supplies you will need. The sewing class will provide you with a list of supplies and materials that you will be required to bring with you. Make sure you bring everything on the list, because if it’s on the list, then it will be used in the class. As well, if the classes are being held at a store location, the store will often offer discounts on the required supplies for the class.
-
But, don’t bring expensive material to the class. Bring material that is easy to work with, but since it is inexpensive, it won’t matter if you make a mistake. You can always redo the technique or project you are learning when you go home. Remember, practice makes perfect!
-
Dress comfortably. Unless you have been in the room before, you won’t know if it will be too cold or hot. Therefore, it’s best to dress in layers. As well, bring some water. Make sure it’s in a bottle, so that you can put it on the floor and not worry about getting your supplies wet or dirty.
-
Remember your etiquette. Show up to class at least 10 minutes early. This will allow you to find a good seat in the class and meet the other people in your class. As well, during the class, pay attention to the teacher and keep talking to a minimum. You don’t want to disrupt the class and take away from someone else’s learning experience. Plus, you can always talk to people after the class is over or during breaks.
-
If you need help, just ask! Don’t be embarrassed – you’re taking the class to learn and the best way to learn is to ask questions. Often there are little tricks to each technique or even different ways to produce the same result. Finally, if you really don’t like a certain stitch or technique, don’t worry about it. Figure out what parts you like, what you want to create and then work with the techniques you like.
-
Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s not a race. All that matters is learning, not speed. If you are really having trouble keeping up with the whole class, ask the instructor for help or just try doing half the project. The most important thing is to learn the technique and then practice it more at home. Concentrate on learning and making sure you are satisfied with the way your project turns out because that is all that matters.
-
Most importantly, enjoy the class! Not only will you learn more from the class, but you’ll want to keep sewing. Have an open mind because this could be the beginning of new friendships and opportunities in the future.
