If you are just learning how to use a sewing machine I would highly recommend sewing on paper first. You can remove the thread from your sewing machine and use paper as you would cloth. Sewing on paper will help you navigate the foot as well as help you gain speed control. Draw lines on your paper to follow and see how closely you can follow along the lines. This practice will give you more confidence with your machine before attempting larger projects.
Most people have no trouble learning how to navigate their machine after an hour or so. The most common struggle people have when trying to use a sewing machine for the first time is threading the machine. Some machines now will automatically thread themselves but chances are you will not be starting out on a machine like this.
There are many instructional tools that can help you through this process. If your sewing machine’s manual isn’t much help you should have a friend or family member make note cards for you so you can practice. You may even be able to find an instructional video as well.
Once you have mastered threading the machine and you are confident you can navigate it, you should start on a small project. Sewing clothing for a first project is a mistake many people make. Your first project should be something very simple.
I recommend sewing a blanket as your first project. If you think that project may be a little too simple for you, you could also try sewing a larger stuffed animal. Many stores carry all-in-one kits for beginners. These kits will contain everything you need for the project as well as instructions specifically for beginners. The larger the project the easier it will be for you to be able to complete.
