It seems there has been a revival in home sewing. Maybe it is because of the craft craze that is so popular and maybe it is because there is a greater interest in producing one’s own garments for whatever reason. So we have decided to get a sewing machine. Where do we start? What is the best sewing machine to buy?
The choice these days is a huge one as there are many sewing machines on the market and many brands to choose from. However, the choice is easier in one way and that is when we buy a modern machine we know it is going to do all we require and then some. Modern sewing machines have a multitude of features built in and most of them we would probably never use. Unless of course we are expert sewers then we would know exactly what to buy.
How do the rest of us decide? How do we know what is the best machine for us? I suppose that does depend a little on what we want a sewing machine for and what we are going to do with it. If we are just going to use it for a bit of craft work and maybe to knock up an occasional piece for the kids then a good general all round machine will do the job and will not cost a fortune. In fact, the latest sewing machines are very well priced now even though they do so much more than they used to.
Remember the old foot pedal type that our grand parents used to have? They are still in use in some parts of the world. We were at a Chinese new year exhibition in the Philippines once and they had some rolls of beautiful silk cloth for sale in gorgeous colors. My wife bought a few meters and we went to one of her neighbors to have it made into a couple of dresses. The lady with the sewing business worked in a small room behind her house and used one of those old pedal machines. It only cost a few dollars for the two dresses but it just goes to show how reliable those old machines were. That machine is going several hours a day and has been for years. I am not sure if the modern machine will do that for you but they are pretty good.
If you are feeling extra creative just imagine the dresses and stuff you could turn out for yourself. It will cost you a fraction of store bought stuff and you would have the satisfaction of knowing that it was made properly. A lot of mums now make their kids clothes as they seem to have become so expensive and they only last a little while as the kids are growing so fast. Another good reason to have a good machine in the house is to encourage your own kids to learn how to use it. If you can get them interested it will equip them for life to be able to do all those little sewing jobs that always seem to come up. When our daughter was a teenager in high school she would work for a couple of hours after school sewing up T shirts in a local factory. Gave her some good skills and some pocket money. Teenagers need lots of clothes so we made a deal. She could have any clothes she wanted as long a she made them herself on our home machine. That worked out well.
Anyway, there are plenty of reasons to have a sewing machine in the house so how do we find the best sewing machine to buy. Luckily that is not too difficult now. First you need a reliable supplier so you have access to any after sales service you may need. You can do all this on line now and it is probably easier that way. Check their star ratings and find a machine with at least four stars. Look to see how many have already bought that particular machine and read some of their comments. If you can find a good all round machine that is well priced and does all you need, I mean some of these machine have 60 odd inbuilt stitches now, go for it. What would you do with all those stitches. If you know nothing about sewing machines be guided with those that have bought before. A machine’s popularity is usually a good guide. It is a brand you recognize, does all you need and usually more, and is priced around $150. Then you have it. Go for it and get sewing. You will find it a relaxing hobby.
