Grease is possibly the most pernicious type of household grime we have to deal with, on an all too regular basis. Stainless steel surfaces and cooker hoods are particularly prone to the accumulation of grease. While it’s a well-known fact that some cleaning products can cut through grease and grime in no time, they are expensive and they can also cut through small eco-systems and destroy them. Chemical cleaners are great, but they can be harmful to the environment and they aren’t the sort of thing that you might want stored around small, inquisitive fingers and mouths. The answer? Steam cleaning.

Steam cleaners are incredibly versatile and increasingly affordable. They may cost more than a cheap bottle of toxic bleach, but they don’t need to be replaced every week and will last for years. You don’t need to add anything other than water to a steam cleaner to get it going and they are easy and safe to use. We’ll cover grease in a minute, but before that it’s worth understanding what exactly a steam cleaner can be used for around the home.

• Carpets, curtains and upholstery; these are the most well-known items for the steam cleaner treatment. A steam cleaner will clean hygienically and they are far more effective than vacuuming when it comes to removing harmful elements stored in the fibres of carpets. Ideal for those with the type of child that is not yet of the upright variety.

• Bathroom and Kitchen; the tiles, surfaces and sinks in both are susceptible to all kinds of dirt and germs. The warm, humid atmosphere can contribute to the build-up of moulds and growth of bacteria. Expensive chemical warfare can be employed, but why bother when it takes half the time with a steam cleaner, which will actually kill off all the harmful elements.

The Grease Question

So back to that old bugbear; grease is generally most noticeable on our shining stainless steel fittings. That would be the ones that looked so good in the display kitchen, and now are proving so hard to maintain. Steam cleaners make removing grease almost child’s play – supervised child’s play though.

The hot jet of steam simply lifts and clears grease away. A good steam cleaner will come with a special hand tool for just this sort of job, which comes with a terry cloth that grabs the grease as it goes. For the more ingrained type of grease that you occasionally need to lift in a hurry, you’ll normally need to go over the surface a few times with the cloth. For general everyday cleaning a quick burst of steam and wipe over will do the trick. A steam cleaner is also absolutely ideal for cleaning that barbecue grease off that somebody never got round to doing last summer!
