Hi everyone! I normally lurk on this sub, but, well, I just bought a dress pattern and need some advice for choosing fabric.
The pattern I got is Simplicity 1080 (Amazon link). It’s a simple dress that I think is easy enough I can manage to make it without too much trouble. (I’ve done very basic sewing before, and I have made a skirt without any trouble.)
The issue I’m having is I don’t know a lot of the vocabulary surrounding sewing (I’m more of a knitter), and I don’t know what different kinds of fabric are called. I’d love to keep away from 100% synthetics, but beyond that I’m at a bit of a loss.
There are fabrics listed on the pattern packaging and they are: Batiks, Calico, Challis, Chambray, Cotton Lawn, Cotton Types, Dotted Swiss, Eyelet, Linen Types, Madras, Poplin, Shirtings
I don’t have a clue what most of those words mean! (I know what cotton and linen are but “Cotton Types”, “Linen Types”?????) Is there a good resource for learning about different fabric types? I have a few books, but they only cover the basics, and I’m failing at Google-fu for finding definitions of the fabrics.
If you all could be wonderful enough to help me out I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!
