A sewing table used to be found in almost every home during the nineteenth century. Today because the cost of clothing and other apparel is so competitive – it is rare to find one in most homes because it is just not as necessary as it was years ago. Most folks that sew now look at it as more of a hobby than a necessity. Tables for sewing have evolved over the years as the sewing machine has evolved. Sewing machines used to be bolted to the table that they sat on. They were like one entire unit, but today with the advent of modern sewing equipment the pieces are normally independent of each other.

The table usually sits at a height that is comfortable for most people to sit up at with their legs easily fitting under the table to work the foot pedal of the sewing machine. It can be made from a variety of materials, but traditionally was made of wood. There is usually a work surface and a whole in the center where the sewing machine sits on a brace or platform that is lower than the rest of the table.

Is It Necessary?

It depends on who you ask as to how necessary a certain type of table is to the art of sewing. Some folks swear by them and do not feel quite comfortable sewing on anything else, because of the way the machine is lowered in the center of the table. Some folks don’t seem to mind the task with the sewing machine sitting on top of a regular table. It really comes down to personal preference. Using this type of table while sewing does make the task easier, if not only more comfortable. Having the sewing machine at a lower level makes it easier to feed the material through the machine and it also makes it more comfortable to not have to reach over the machine to use it. It relieves muscle strain and pull on the upper back and arms.

Styles

There is a host of materials that these type of tables can be made from. There are plastic models, composite models and natural material models. It is entirely left up to personal preference and the style of the home to decide which type is best. There are some very simple models that are geared to simply holding the sewing machine. Some models are very elaborate; they have doors and look much like a cabinet when closed up. Whatever style you choose to match your needs, a sewing table will make easier work of sewing.
