Fabrics that act like wool but are not wool? Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

i don't wear wool, but sometimes a pattern suggests using wool as the fabric. they dont just choose these materials for no reason, so what could i use instead that would have a similar feel to wool? does it really matter that much? (i'm pretty new to sewing, so any and all fabric picking tips would help!)
