[No Pattern]Creating a Dog Bed! – Never done this befor Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

Hello everyone,

So i have absolutely no experience with sewing, but i have the desire to create a dog bed for our new puppy who we are expecting to pick up around the 5th of July.

I will be doing this as a joint project with my wife, she’ll work on 1 side, while i work on the other kinda thing.

Now we’ve worked out the dimensions we want which is roughly 1.3m x 1m. We would have a Zip or Velcro at the end and we were also thinking about attaching a inner bean bag liner as well to hold the beans.

The fabric ideally needs to be strong/resistant to dogs, they like to dig on their beds and with their nails can easily shred poor quality dog bed fabrics. It also ideally needs to be washable, just in case the dog pees on the bed.

We’ve been reading about the best stitch to use to bind this all together and we have found that apparently the back stitch is one of if not the strongest stitch. So this sounds ideal.

So onto the part where you kind people can help!

First of all, is this project achievable? I’m a bit worried about our complete lack of experience, but with this basically being a rectangle bag and no fancy designs I’m assuming (Rightly or not) that it won’t be to hard.

Secondly do you have any recommendations as to the type of fabric to use that will be strong enough? And a strong type of thread?

And lastly, will a backstitch be strong enough to hold all this together?

Thanks a lot!
