I find that the most common reason why sewing needles break is that one uses a needle for lighter weight fabrics on heavyweight fabrics. Check to see what kind of needle you have. I find that on heavy fabrics, its easier to use a needle especially made for denim or leather, even if your coat is not made of denim or leather. Try schmetz denim needles size 16/100 or 18/110 or try schmetz leather needles size 16/100 or 18/110

If the thread keeps breaking even if you are using the correct needle, try adjusting the thread tension.
