Spectacular ribbon roses will bloom right before your eyes. Luxurious and magnificent roses can be created in minutes. Making ribbon roses has become quite popular because it is very easy, versatile, and fast. You can also create themes and add your own personal touch; such as color, and texture. Beads can also be incorporated in a tasteful manner. You can repeat this rose and the result will always be different. It looks fantastic in large scale and also in miniature. The abbreviation for ribbon width is RW.

Materials:

1½ yards of 1½ inch of ribbon: 36 RW, wired or non-wired

Scissors

Crinoline

Needle and Thread

Basic Method:

Begin by folding one end of the ribbon down diagonally toward you. This folded ribbon forms the edge of a square. Leave a tail of ½ inch. Fold this portion in half to “close the book.” Place your thumb 1/8 inch away from the fold, and fold again, against your thumb to begin rolling. Roll the short tail as well and continue to roll. As you role several times you will notice that the outer selvedge is starting to form a circle. Attach this budded center on a piece of crinoline and secure with a pin on the back. Make sure you secure the selvedges of your bud with the pin. Now gather the rest of the ribbon either pulling the wire to create a ruffle or with a running stitch down the remaining length of the ribbon. When pulling the wire be very careful not to tear the wire. Crinoline is great because you can spread your ruffle as you stitch down into the backing. When you spread your ruffle you might see parts of the crinoline. In order to hide the crinoline you could place another piece of fabric on the crinoline before stitching the bud and ruffle in place. The fabric could match the rose or be of contrasting color. Once you’ve made a few of these roses you can place them on any project; a quilt, a pillow sham, a purse, or on a table runner.
