If you often wash dirty socks, smelly shirts and soiled blankets, your washing machine cannot help but get smelly and dirty as well. We humans get dirty when we clean our homes. Our washing machine also gets dirty when it cleans our clothes.

And like us humans, our washing machines also need a bath. I am not talking about carrying it in your bathroom to soap and scrub it clean, you can just use the washer’s own washing cycle with just a few suggestions.

Step 1: Scrub the inside of the washer clean. Scrubbing the tub gets rid of all the dirt and grime and oil that has accumulated inside. If you are doing this the first time, you may want to seek the help of baking soda.

It has natural abrasive qualities that can slough off deeply seated dirt and grime on your washer’s tub. It cleans so well you need only to do this once or twice a month.

Step 2: Run an empty hot water cycle to get rid of the residues from the baking soda and the residues that you have sloughed off. Any baking soda left inside the tub needs to be eliminated so that it will not interact with the bleach you are using for your clothes.

Step 3: Once you have finished Step 2, run the hot water cycle again but this time add a cup of vinegar. This is the trick that can really get rid of the smell. The vinegar smell will fade away in no time along with the musty smell of your washing machine.

Step 4: Once you have drained off the water from Step 3, dry the inside of the tub using a dry and clean towel. Start at the corners as these are usually the areas that are difficult to dry off. Take this time to remove any lint that may be blocking its drainage.

Step 5: Leave the door of the tub open. You can also open the windows to your laundry area to let the air in. This should naturally dry off the remaining moisture in your washing machine. You can do this every after washing your clothes so that it won’t easily smell musty.

It will also help if you do not overload your washer with clothes as this can prevent a proper drainage procedure. Once you follow all this, your washing machine should smell fresh and clean at all times.
