The ship actually carried twenty-four 32-pound carronades on her main deck, eight on her quarter deck and forecastle, plus four 6-pound long guns as chasers. This was 126 feet long on the gundeck, with a 31 ft 8 in. beam, and weighed 579 tons.

French ships were believed to possess high levels of maneuverability and speed, and thus were frequently targeted by the Royal Navy. French ships could run out most other ships because of the streamlined design of their hull, below the waterline. It is remembered for its role in rescuing the frigate Hermione, whose crew had mutinied and killed their commander, Captain Pigot, and other officers. Hermione was then surrendered to the Spanish, who were allied with the French, and was in the harbor at Puerto Cabello (Venezuela), defended by shore batteries mounting about 200 guns. This is when the boats of it, led in person by Captain Hamilton, were detected and fired upon by the patrolling gunboats. However, the HMS Surprise’s team continued to proceed and boarded the Hermione, cleared its deck and sailed her out. Consequently, Hermione was restored to the Royal Navy. The Surprise sailed back to England where she was sold at Deptford in February 1802.
