Around the 1860s to 1870s, a kind of fan that was powered by running water was created. It was not powered by an electric motor at first. It was just water with a turbine that works hand in hand to turn the blades of the fan. At that time though, there were only two-blade fans available. They have a built a system that was able to accommodate a lot of fans. They used it for offices, restaurants, and even in stores.

By the 1880s, it was when fans powered by electricity were created. Instead of a huge belt system being powered by water, it had its own motor unit powered by electricity. It was John Fany who invented the electric-powered fan. He adapted the concept he had used when he created the motor for the first sewing machine from Singer. Back then, the people called it the “Fany Electric Fan” after it inventor. It was operated like the popular fan that we know today.

He continued to make improvements to his invention no matter how many other competitors were catching up to his design. He added a light kit to the ceiling fan to make up for the light fixture that has been replaced by the ceiling fan, just like the ceiling fans of our time.
