Help please drag lines from iron on cotton! Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

I set the iron to synthetics and it still caused multiple small drags across the fabric despite it being cotton. It is a steam iron if that makes any difference. I think I have ruined two shirts ! I think I need to clean the iron, but is there a way of ironing out those lines or is the fabric now thin and ruined? Thanks
