Most home embroiders have the typical personality of a person that also enjoys exploring their creative side. This is why often we are also knitters, quilters, chiefs, and artists alike. As a home embroiderer we want to be creative. In exploring what is out there for us the use our creative talents with we quickly find that there are absolutely an over abundance of embroidery designs available for us to use. So naturally we are going to be drawn to the “free embroidery designs” advertisements fist. After all most of us already spend thousands on the machine, threads, etc so that we have the ability to do machine embroidery right? Why pay more for designs when there are so many free ones.
Well guess what, if you’re not careful these so called free embroidery designs can be like a Trojan horse when you go to embroider them out and can potentially cost you hundreds in machine repair. That’s right; a bad design can most defiantly cause damage to your machine if you not careful. If a embroidery design is poorly created (digitized) without using the proper settings often times it will cause your machine to break thread, break needles, create the notorious “Birds Nest” and even cause the machine to go out of time which would then require a trip to the service department. So why am I warning you of this? Well for one reason I don’t repair sewing machines for a living. Also I want to point out that always using high quality designs does not allow you to forgo maintaining your machine properly. All embroidery machines will need to make a trip to the store every so often to sure to have it is in tune. Most reputable stores will offer some sort of maintenance contract with the machine for this purpose and I do recommend that you take advantage of this type of coverage. After all these machines are very technical and will need a tune up if nothing else about every year or so.
Let’s get back to on point about free embroidery designs. Does this mean that all free designs are bad or that you should never stitch a design you got for free? Well you and I both know that just isn’t going to happen so lets be realistic here. Of course you are going to stitch a free design on your machine, so what I am getting at is that you should stay away from downloading designs that you will never stitch and/or don’t look that great on the screen in the first place because if its not attractive to you then its not going to get better with time. So rather than wasting you time downloading every free design you can find – be picky. My recommendation is to look to the major sources for embroidery designs and see what they are offering you for free. Most commonly major designer companies will often offer free samples for you to try so that you can appreciate the quality of their work in hopes that you will come back and buy something. These designs are typically digitized by a person or staff member of that company with years of experience and are making their livelihood from these designs that they create. These are the type of free embroidery designs that will create a beautiful quality work of art that will last for years to come. For all those hundred (if not thousands) of other designs that don’t meet your standard do yourself a favor and get ride of them because unlike a nice bottle of wine embroidery designs do not get better with age.
