You may have been using the same washing machine since the first year of your marriage but you have never cleaned it up or anything. You may think that as long as it washes your clothes, everything is going to be alright. You may think that it is pretty much better to stick to your old washing machine rather than to waste money on buying something new and fancy shmancy.

However, what you may not know or realize is that your washing machine may have been telling you that it needs to be taken care of more. That little, somewhat weird chugging sounds which you tried hard to ignore may not have been simple sounds but manifestations of a greater problem. Well, you should remember that appliances are not made to last forever, and the laundry machine is one of them.

Yes it will sooner or later break down but that does not mean you do not have to take care of your clothes washer. It gives you service and it washes all your clothes, even the really dirty ones without complaint so it is only right that you return the service. How will you take care of it? Here are some basic do’s and dont’s.

Do clean all the washing machine parts

You may think you are too lazy to do this, but let’s be honest, who would be hardworking enough to always clean the parts of his clothes washer? It may be tiring but we have got to do it. Take a closer look at your washing machine when you’re using it. You may notice that the pressure of water is becoming weak, certainly not as strong as when you first bought it.

It is not something to be ignored because weak water pressure does not only waste your time and energy, it also increases your water bill as well. Most of the time however, you do not have to go see a repairman to fix this problem; you only have to locate its unclean and dirt clogged filter and clean it. To find it, remove the cold water hose and have something ready beneath it to catch water. Then, with a pair of tweezers, remove the filter from the hole where you disconnected the hose. Clean it with water until it is clear and then put it back. Then, put the hose back. You will notice that the water pressure is back to normal.

Do not overload the washing machine

Some people may think that putting a lot of clothes into the laundry machine tub will save time and energy because then the number of loads you have to wash will be limited. While it is okay to do that, you have to keep in mind that if the number of clothes you put inside the tub exceeds its normal capacity, unpleasant consequences may follow.

Overloading your laundry appliance will ruin its natural rhythm. It will be out of balance and because of that, you may not be able to wash your clothes properly and thoroughly the next laundry day. Also, these are some additional tips. Wash your shirts and other soft garments separately from heavier garments such as pants. And when washing shirts, make two separate batches for white shirts and colored shirts.

Do drain water every after washing

Drain the water from the washing machine tub thoroughly every after using it. Leaving water or even just a little amount of moisture inside the washer will leave a nasty, musty smell. (So that’s why my washer smells a little funky these days?) Moisture will also cause formation of molds, mildew and other unsightly things you would rather not have on your clothes.

To avoid the musty smell, molds and mildew sticking to your clothes, leave the washer door open after using. Let it dry. Top loaders are easier to drain because their drain hose is on the bottom but for front loaders which have drain hoses on the side, it is more difficult. Wipe the entire tub with a dry rag to ensure that no amount of moisture is left inside.

Do not spill any chemical on your washing machine

What may seem like a common incident may actually be one of the reasons why the life span of your clothes washer can shorten. Chemicals which include detergent and fabric conditioner may seem innocent and useful enough but what most people don’t know is that they contain corrosive compounds that are known to ruin appliances and it includes the washer

Spilling these substances during laundry time is unavoidable so you have to always be prepared with a rag. Each time you spill chemicals on the washing machine, wipe it dry with a rag immediately. Clean it up before it corrodes your precious washer. This is specially true for machines that are made of ceramic.

But even if your washer boasts of being able to resist corrosion, you still have to wipe these chemicals off. Residues of detergent and fabric conditioner left behind in the tub can build up unwanted lime deposits. You can clean these up by spinning water inside the tub and draining it afterwards.
