Im not sure what you mean by “bulk”… Cones? Quantity?
I buy a fair bit of thread on cones. It was an adjustment to get used to using the stand. This adjustment wasn’t hard, mostly figuring out where to put it so as not to snag the thread was the biggest issues and now it seems very natural. I tend to buy a few cones at a time. There is a base cost to shipping something, and that doesn’t change much if your buying one item or 10, so spreading out the cost over a few items gets me a lower price.
- Understand what your ordering: This is a great resource: http://coatsandclarksewingsecrets.com/files/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Unravelingthemysteryofthreadsize1.pdf the net net is your probably going to want to stick with tex 30 and tex 40 to start with. Thread can be amazingly complicated, and varied but there are reasons for those distinctions, its a world that you may want to explore after learning about it.
- There will be some upfront investment: Your going to want to buy some color charts with your first order, and these aren’t cheep ($20) as well as a cone stand ($20). Even if your only going to get cones in basic colors, the cost savings makes it worth while.
- Figure out the true cost per yard where your shopping and roughly where your going to start to see the big savings. I tend not to order unless I am picking up at least 6 cones of thread, or other items (I buy needles 100 at a time from CTS, and change them out with each project now)
