Do you think I could make a functional fencing jacket? Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

My husband fences semi-regularly and wears a fencing jacket for protection. It does the job, but he says it’s boring (the standard is plain white) and he would love something with more a of a Kenneth Branagh flair to it.

Now, I’d love to make him one, but not only am I not sure where to start, I’m not sure if as a home seamstress it’s even possible. His swords have welded tips so there is no stabbing involved, but there is always the possibility of a broken blade, which is what the fencing jacket protects from.

I’ve browsed for patterns, but it seems that all historical fencing jacket patterns I’ve found are simply for the use of a costume, rather than actual protection.

My goal would be to find a pattern to make a badass fencing jacket that doesn’t have the unintended side effect of a husband shish kabob.

What do we think, can it be done? Any advice?
