College degree Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

So I’ve been wanting to start my own business for a while, tho I’m still new to sewing but it’s the only thing I’ve done in my life that I feel comfortable with but I’ve had very little training. But I’ve been reading a lot from various fashion/costumers that I follow and it seems a lot have degrees of some sort. My question is those of you who have a degree in fashion or costume design do you feel that you have that competitive edge because of it?
