Buttonhole issues in flannel Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

I’m taking a stab at handstitching a flannel shirt, and I’m having a hell of a time with the buttonholes. Even when I do buttonholes on flannel with a sewing machine, they come out kind of funky. Is there something I’m missing when it comes to sewing buttonholes in flannel??
