What causes your motors tap sound their valves make?

1- Your engine valves – those that let fuel in, and spent fuel out as exhaust after your motors combustion cycle, collect “varnish” residues on their valve stems. It is that sticky varnish that resist and slows down the closing action of the valve – creating a space between the bottom of the valve stem and the cam that raises and lowers it.

As the valves rotating cam lobe swings around – 10 times a minute, to raise and lower valves, the space lets the cam or other part slam against the valve – which you hear as a metallic tap sound. Tap, Tap,Tap.

2- Crustatious combustion carbon deposits also can hold the valve open a bit creating the same space and resulting tapping sound. Sticky valves may cause a loping and rough engine idle. 3- The other tapping origin is from a small dirty check-valve problem inside your motors hydraulic lifters. When dirty oil fails to pump-up a little piston the size of your small finger tip – the adjuster. The lifter piston uses oil and oil pressure to push it against the valves stem bottom, to take-up wear gap.

When this little piston sticks, or the tiny valve that allows oil pressure to push it outward is blocked, the piston drops. That makes a space causes the tap sound. From all this…
