I've only hand sewn before and I want to make this Sewing Machines Parts and Sales in Los Angeles

I saw this poncho hoodie thing in mfa and I wanna make one for myself that’s not as tight and a little more casual. What kinds of fabric or thread do I use? What Patterns do I use? Do I make patterns? I haven’t ever sewn in my life, except for hand-sewing patches onto a jacket.
