Hi all, I'm somewhat new to sewing but have gone sewing crazy in the last few months. Currently taking a break due to my work space being taken over by holiday decorations, but I'm having a few issues that I'd like to figure out before I dive back in. I'm not sure if a new machine is the answer or if I'm just missing something with my current one.
Most of my sewing is for costumes and I do use some heavier, thicker fabrics, like vinyl.
I've been using my Mom's Bernina 1005 for the last, well, forever. She got it as a wedding gift so this machine is as old as I am (26). It's been chugging a bit lately and I believe that it at least needs to get in for some maintenance somewhere, if that's an option. I've been having some issues with sewing heavier, stretchier fabrics with it though. I recently made some boot covers out of a vinyl and the foot pressure caused it to bunch up and make horrible horrible edges that, luckily, were folded over anyways so it wasn't that big of a deal. I have future projects where this will be an issue though. I've seen things online saying to adjust the pressure of the foot, but I cannot figure out if that's even a possibility on this machine. I've asked my mother and she also does not think it can be done and recommended I go use my grandmother's serger.
I guess that I have two options right now. Either get the Bernina in for some maintenance and cart all my supplies across town to use my Grandma's serger in the hopes that it wont butcher my vinyl, or I can purchase a machine that might be better suited to my projects.
I don't have the largest budget for a new machine, ideally no more than $200 but could probably go closer to $400 if I hold off for a few months. I've been seeing the Brother CS6000i recommended in a few places on this sub and am wondering if that would work or if I'd end up having a lot of the same issues.
Any help or advice is extremely appreciated.
