How to Make Your Own Fabric Coffee Cup Holder – Sewing Machines Los Angeles

Have you ever bought a coffee from a coffee shop and the cup was too hot? What did you do? Well, here’s a simple solution – make your very own fabric coffee cup holder. Use it instead of using napkins or another coffee cup. You’ll reduce waste, help save the environment and keep your fingers cool all at the same time!

Here’s a list of the supplies you will need:

• Fabric,
• Batting,
• Bias, and
• Sewing Machine.

The first step is to cut out two pieces of material and one piece of batting to the following dimensions:  

• The top length should be 10 1/2 inches;
• The bottom length should be 9 1/2 inches;
• The width should be 3 inches.

Next, cut two pieces of bias.  The bias will be used as a border on the top and bottom edges.  Cut one piece of bias 10 1/2 inches long and the second piece 9 1/2 inches long.

Before sewing everything together, it is a good idea to iron it.  This will remove any creases or wrinkles from the fabric before you sew.  Plus, you need to prepare the bias before you use it.  Start by folding the bias in half lengthwise and then hold it in place while you iron.  This will create a crease in the middle and make it easier to sew it in place.

Once the fabric has been prepared, you can place the layers of material in order.  Starting with the bottom, place one piece of fabric on the table, with the wrong side facing up.  Over that piece, place the batting.  Finally, place the second piece of fabric on top, with the right side facing up.  Once the layers are lined up, use pins to keep them together temporarily.  

Now you are ready to sew the material together.  Take the longer piece of bias and position it over the top edge of the layer, making sure that one side of the bias is over the front layer and the other side of the bias is over the back layer.  Sew the bias and the top edge of the layers together.  Next, do the same with the shorter piece of bias and the bottom edge of the layer.

Finally, sew the side edges of the cup holder together.  Turn it inside out and you are finished!  No more hot fingers for you!
