The hardest tasks to complete are often the most rewarding. When it comes to morning workouts, this is absolutely true.
Although it’s much easier to grab a cup of coffee as you’re headed out the door, it is not always the most effective option. The energy attained from caffeine is short lived and does not produce anywhere near the same mental and physical benefits as exercise is capable of providing.
Now, before I scare everyone away, let me ease your worries by informing you that “workouts” do not have to be strenuous or intense to be effective. In fact, walking, yoga, pilates, weight training, jogging, calisthenics, swimming, cycling, or even exercise videos can benefit you in ways you never thought possible. Remember, most of these are exercises that can be completed in the comfort and privacy of your own home!
Even if you plan on working out later in the day, it is wise to perform some light exercises to prepare your body and mind for the day. This will encourage a greater amount of oxygen flow to your brain and the rest of your blood vessels. You will look and feel better following your morning workout!
Although I recommend exercising early, try not to jump straight into strenuous exercise immediately after waking up. Allow yourself a few minutes to listen to some music and perform some light stretches.
This will also be a great time to re-hydrate yourself with a glass of water. Give yourself a little time to wake up before initiating an energizing morning workout.
One huge reason to exercise in the morning is to boost your metabolism. When you exercise early, you will increase the amount of fat burned throughout the day, sometimes up to 2 or 3 times more compared to working out later in the day.
Morning workouts have the ability to increase your alertness and overall energy level for the remainder of the day. You will notice a complete change in the way you feel after you complete a workout early in the day. As well as experience a feeling of accomplishment and confidence, you will be better prepared to take on whatever obstacles stand in your way.
Another reason why workouts are preferable in the morning hours is the improvement of the quality of sleep at night. An early workout will increase the likelihood of falling asleep faster and sleeping more thoroughly throughout the night. This is a great way to set your body’s clock over time.
Conversely, if you exercise in the evening, it will make you too alert and energized for rest. If insufficient time is available to wind down after a late workout, your body will not be able to fall into a quality sleep because your system is stimulated.
Avoid exercising on an empty stomach by eating a small snack before morning workouts. Your body will need some calories to burn or else it will start to use protein from lean muscle tissue within the body!
