Soy candles are among the cleanest of all candles as they produce little or no smoke. They are also very popular in the United States as soy is grown in many parts of the country. Iowa and Indiana are major produces of soy and these states also burn the largest number of soy candles.

Before you start making candles, you need to get soy candle making supplies. The wax first. There are several brands available and in each brand you get different varieties of soy wax. Soy wax is not as strong as paraffin. So each of the varieties, differ in the amount of paraffin additive. If you are just starting, then you can get one that is fairly inexpensive.

After you have made the selection of wax, you need to get a double boiler. A double boiler is a two pot setup that is used to melt the wax. Each of these pots is different in size. The smaller pot holds the wax and is placed in the bigger pot that is filled with water. This bigger pot is then placed on the heat source.

The wax and double boiler ticked off, you need molds. Molds come in different shapes, sizes, and are made of different materials. To start off, do not spend too much on the molds. Get a couple of aluminum ones. Aluminum gives a good finish and is inexpensive compared to silicon.

If you are not going to mold the candles, then you can get jars. Jars are inexpensive and can add a touch of personality to your candles. They are cheaper than molds and the wax collected can be used again.

After you have purchased the mold/jar, you can proceed to buying wicks, fragrances, color dyes, additives and candle releaser. If you are using aluminum molds then you would require a candle releaser to get the candle out.

All the soy candle making supplies in hand, you are ready to make your soy candles.
