If you’re interested in becoming a quilter, but are worried that it is too expensive of a hobby to have, you don’t have to worry. As a beginner, you might think you will have to spend hundreds of dollars on materials just to get started. This is not the case.

How can a beginning quilter save money on quilting materials? There are many different ways that you can cut down on costs, and make your quilts for a very reasonable cost.

One of the most expensive parts to quilting is the sewing machine. For some reason people think that you need to have the most expensive sewing machine out there to make a good quilt. This is definitely not the case. You can use your mother’s old sewing machine if you want, or look for one at a garage sale. Even if you want to find yourself a new sewing machine, you can easily get a new, very nice one for under $100. These machines will even have “extras” like being able to stitch multiple stitches. So there is no reason you will have to spend a lot of money on a sewing machine. You can also look for one on sale, which will help make it even less expensive.

If you take good measurements and figure out exactly how much material you will need, you will be able to make sure you buy the correct amount of material, and won’t spent extra on things that you won’t use. If you also cut your fabrics correctly, you won’t have a lot of extra “wasted” pieces when you are finished.

For the fabric that you do have to buy, always look for good prices. Between sales, and coupons that you can find for many crafts stores, you shouldn’t have to pay a lot for fabric. Also, there are many websites online where you will be able to find fabrics for very little money! If you don’t mind spending a little bit of time to look, you will be surprised how cheap you can find your fabrics.

As far as the rest of the materials you need, you don’t need to spend much on those either. Again, many craft stores have great sales and coupons that you can use, and if you look for those you won’t have to spend a lot at all.

As long as you pay attention to what you are buying, and don’t just buy the first things you see, you won’t have to spend a lot of money when making a quilt. So just because you are a beginner at quilting, don’t think you will have to spend a lot of money. Just keep your eyes open, and look for good prices and you will be set!
